... and  his wife Eva (Švankmajerová,  +2005) who was a surrealist painter, writer, ceramic and puppetry artist  .

She was responsible for the art direction, created the puppets and did the animation in his movies . I wanna find out more about her ... 

       ( I finally bought the bfi-edition (DVD&BluRay set) 


Also : without this movie there would be no "Coraline " (Neil Gaiman) and  "Tideland " (Terry Gilliam's last (really) good movie) ...

... and : (somewhat related) check out "Spirit of the Beehive " (1973) by Víctor Erice (among other things one of the best jump scares in film history)  

                      and Walt Disney's  "Return to Oz" (1985) ... (not kidding) .

(I just remember the two-crying- turtles-painting from some Dali Art books )

Have you seen Return to Oz  ? (I just found out about it (recently))

It's a (involuntarily ?) weird, "trippy", funny , good-dumb/silly  kids' movie :

( The corridor scenes in the asylum remind me of Hellraiser,  the talking chicken-companion is bonkers ...

plus : petrified citizens , the wheelers (!), the windup toy soldier-robot, Jack the Pumpkinhead/Scarecrowboy who
calls little Dorothy "Mum" ...

also : they "macgyver" a flying Elk/Moosehead-Sofa-creature ...

... there is a (at on point) "headless" witch ... (she has spare heads locked in cabinets) ... 

And the Stone-Mountain King who stole and wears(!) Dorothy's ruby slippers and smokes a pipe.
And his stone-spy, he sends out to surveil the progress of the group .

All the weird stone/claymation animation !

... and some really good set design choices (also some not so good ones) ...

SO ! (super-unrelated) :  

I watched  "  Das ewige Leben/ Life Eternal"  by Wolfgang Murnberger
(based on the Brenner (crime) novels by Wolf Haas)   last night .

It's a "better" movie than it's predecessor " Der Knochenmann / The Boneman ", which is a way funnier (and
also a really good) movie .

(There are 2 more (Silentium/Komm süßer Tod), also good .)


The actors in both of these movies are great, which helps a lot  ...


If you wanna learn more about Austria, which is not a great country (not just because of our (Nazi-) history)
and Austrian mentality watch these movies ...
