Description

As a boy in 1897, Atsidi was overcome with a mysterious illness and was plagued with a disturbing recurring dream. Medicine men performed ceremonies, praying for his recovery. It seemed bleak, but hope remained, and the illness faded along with the dream. Atsidi recounted the dream to the medicine men, and they believed it interpreted the illness.
Although the dream faded, an unknown phenomenon took hold of Atsidi. He could see what Western metaphysical believers called auras. To the medicine men, Atsidi could see whether a person was walking in hózhǫ or had fallen into hóchxǫ́ǫ́. Never had this been done. Though his family encouraged him to become a medicine man and use his ability, he chose a different path.
Time passed, and Atsidi grew into a man. Life in the 1930s was hard, but for Atsidi it was heading in a pleasant direction until he experienced a terrible loss. Leaving his home, he wandered the West and Southwest, unsure of what he was looking for. He even searched the Forest of Lost Souls, but even that proved futile in alleviating his internal suffering. Then, under his cousin Niyol's urging, he moved to Massachusetts to help him run his underground business.
While at a bar, Atsidi set eyes on the pretty young Timothy "Timmy" McGraw, whose aura shone with innocence and purity. Atsidi immediately felt drawn to him, and a passionate desire grew. Evading the obstacle, which was Timmy's employer, Mr. R., Atsidi shared a night with the boy, and he could feel an uncanny connection growing between them. That night, the recurring dream he had thirty-six years ago returned, puzzling him.
One day, a mysterious dark figure with an equally dark aura arrived in town and threatened Atsidi and Timmy’s harmony. Now Atsidi had more to worry about than Timmy’s brutal employer. Still, he knew this new person posed a more dangerous problem than anything Mr. R. could do. Determined to keep the boy safe from harm, both mystical and manmade, Atsidi didn’t fold under the pressure. He pushed back, determined not to suffer another loss, but was it enough?
