Description
A sketch of Jephthah making his pious sacrifice, as per the Old Testament book of Judges, 11:31-40. Jephthah was a hebrew commander, who pledged to make a burnt offering of the first creature he saw when he returned home from war, should the Lord grant him victory over the Ammonites. Duly, who should come out to meet the conquering hero with tambourine and dance but his unsuspecting maiden daughter...Unlike with Abraham and Isaac, this time God sent no angel to stay his faithful servant's death-dealing hand.
It amused me not long ago to catch, on TV, the Chief Rabbi of England, Sir Jonathan Sacks, extolling scripture as an inspiration to the good parenting ethics. The rabbi (a lovely man, to be sure) probably didn't have this particular passage in mind. Probably not the example of fatherhood offered in Judges 19:24 either).
