Blood Roots — Description

Voices echo within the walls. A distant memory long ago bellows within the emptiness of the church

Robert: Doctor? Have you found anything wrong with our son? What are these…r-roots?

Melinda: I’ve bestowed my words upon you many times, Robert. There is nothing wrong with our son.

Robert: If you opened your eyes, you could see trees coming out of his back!

Melinda: If trees are what they are, then that is of the earth. Gifts Robert!

Robert: Doctor?

Doctor: It’s certainly a case I’ve never witnessed before. It seems as though your “gifted” son has some sort of plant-based vinery growing out of the transverse processes of his spine. A leafless organ, better known as tendrils. I don’t think I need to point out that they have thorns on them too.

Robert: Tendrils!?

Doctor: With careful inspection of a neurologist, they seem to be growing naturally with the rest of his body. Our tests show they are in no way detrimental to his health.

Melinda: See, Robert? Our son is fine.

Robert: No…no, no. That’s not true. Our son is not a tree!

Melinda: Robert!

Robert: Is there anything you can do about them?

Doctor: I would have suggested surgery, but—

Robert: But? But what!?

Doctor: My team has made a few incisions to run tests on this mysterious case, yet it seems that these tendrils only grew back within minutes. I don’t think surgery is going to help.

Robert: Please. Do anything that you can.

Doctor: If you really wish to put your son through this, we will try anything we can to have the growths removed. Though, I feel you should be more concerned as to why your son never cries.

Melinda: Why do you say this?

Doctor: These thorn branches only seem to extract through the ripping of your son’s back skin, yet…he never makes a sound. All except for the occasional giggle.
