Description
"A girl came to the library again and again. Sometimes she came here for curiosity, sometimes for more practical purposes. She checked out adventure stories, art books, comic books, fantasy novels, and the textbooks her brother needed for school. I grew accustomed to her being here at the library. That is, until she came up to the front desk on the verge of tears. She had checked out a book on astronomy, and had read about supernovae and the heat death of the universe. She asked me if this was true. Was the sun really going to explode? Was the whole universe really going to die like that?
Immediately, I could feel my heart burning with guilt and dread. How was I supposed to answer? Lie to her and tell her that such a thing wouldn't happen? Tell her the truth that she would be dead long before something like that ever happened? Maybe tell her that Angela created a kind and gentle afterlife for mortals like her? Somehow, explaining her own mortality to her didn't seem like the right thing to do. Elegy is good at explaining stuff like that, but not me. The thing that made it all worse was that she wouldn't have read something like that if I hadn't let her loose in a library with everything ever written...
So I stopped time. I went to her home universe and I put a spark of divine fire into their sun. When I returned to the library, I was able to tell her a new and more comfortable truth: other stars would wink out and die, but not hers. Her star would stay lit until the end of time. She immediately relaxed. I asked her for the book, and she returned it to me without hesitation.
I really did just use the cosmic power vested in me to avoid having to answer a child's question in a particular way. What was the point of that? I don't know. I just didn't want to reward her innocent curiosity with a small cruelty.
Maybe I need a vacation..."
