I HAVE A BABY NIGHT FURY. YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID.Ahem. I wish I had a super-shiny explanation/story to go with this, but seriously, I just felt like drawing it. And I haven't finished anything in a while (or slapped color on yay!).
Screw ideas, I just draw stuff. XP

EDIT: I've decided the baby's a girl. And that she likes to open and snap shut her fins- especially when someone's touching them. SNAP!

Going by your conversation with 8114, what I'd say is this:
Night Furies, unlike most other dragons, are solitary, unlike other dragons who flock. The Night Fury, once it reaches adulthood, will strike out on its own to find sufficient territory, which might cover hundreds of acres to satisfy food and space needs. When two males or two females meet in the others' territory, violent fights will break out if territorial displays don't do the trick. The only time a dragon is social is when it's breeding season, at which a male will travel to the territories of females to mate with them, or when a female has chicks. Night Furies do not mate for life, though they may play favorites and mate with a particular female several years in a row.

Hiccup: Oh! This! It is actually a really funny story Dad. You wouldn't believe it so how about we don't get into it and I'll make sure she stays in my room okay bye. -attempts to run up the stairs-
Stoick: HICCUP!!
-Hiccup slowly comes back down-
Hiccup: Yeah?
Stoick: Where did you get that dragon?
Hiccup: Well. It's Toothless'.
Stoick: . . . Toothless is a male. Right?
Hiccup: . . .
Stoick: . . .
Hiccup: . . . -cough-
Baby Night Fury: -looks between the two- Meow.
Stoick: . . . Just don't let it burn the house down.
