Description ...So Shall It Break."

prismacolor pencils
A3 printer paper
ref photos - Supernatural screencaps:
Misha Collins/Castiel and Jensen Ackles/Dean Winchester.

This is a giftart for `Cataclysm-X .
She deserves the blood, sweat, and papercuts.
Here's the drawing hanging on Nic's wall: [link]

My scanner killed a lot of this. u.u The difference
between blue and purple is more obvious irl.
And yes, my colouring is getting trippy and haphazard.
I know. But if you wanna tell me so, go ahead.

OH DEAN. Absolutely kills me when you cry.

Edit: Amazed to have gotten a DD for this. Fantastic. Thank you. I used to open my dA everyday hoping to see one, but then decided to stop hoping and start WORKING for it. Guess the hard work approach gets results.

Thank you. Pretty much, yeah. Only, printers are much faster. So I'm quite useless in that sense.

Hi there, i have got to say, just came across your work here on dA and i must admit you have some incredible pieces of work, i am a big fan of supernatural and your colour work is incredible. May i ask, it seems you live in the UK, do you know where i can find a shop where there is some prismacolour pencils available in the UK? It is just that you have inspired me incredibly to experiment using colour pencils.
Thank you
Alex Bird

Unless you want to try ebay, I don't know of anywhere in the UK that sells them. I import mine (both tins and single pencils) through [link] . Buying them full price on ebay looks like roughly the same total cost as importing, since the discount's offset by shipping and customs duty. Either way, they're not cheap.
(I think artists should get some kind of government grant for supplies, since we're responsible for enriching the country's culture. )

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I hate that. But I am glad to hear I've inspired you. Thank you for the compliment.

Thank you so much for the reply, its not a problem at all, because ebay seems to be the only place i've found too
Yeah you've definitely inspired me to use colour more in my work, may i ask have you seen my pencil work? I'd love to hear feedback from yourself, thanks for sharing your work too!

I have to admit I'm not so good with the comment & critique. I don't verbalise well, and I'm also sick, so mostly when I look at art, the only thing I feel is tired and in need of a nap. But I'll try.

By the looks of things, your skills are progressing great on their own, so I'd hesitate to give you any advice whatsoever (really seems like you don't need it. Some people have the good fortune of being able to develop their techniques naturally without any guidance from others - in my opinion that's what constitutes talent).

The one thing I will say is so much blending of shaded areas leaves your figures a little fuzzy and lacking definition. I'd either blend less and practice rendering textures like skin manually using just the pencils (and remember to keep them sharp), OR (much simpler imo) just using a finer blending tool like a q-tip, to go up to the edges. That way you can avoid smudging details like the hairline.

And you probably don't anyway, but please don't ever use your fingers to blend with. You'll leave destructive oils on the paper, and the drawing will degrade more quickly.

This is my friend Nic's tutorial on the subject - [link] It's worth a glance even if, like me, you prefer discovering your own techniques.

Of course, this is all just my personal taste as an anal retentive pedant. I rarely blend at all. I like every part of the drawing to have its own texture. If you'd asked anyone else, they probably wouldn't have had anything to say about it.

I thank you ever so much for giving me the help that i may need to improve! I have actually started a piece of work that uses some of the techniques provided in the link that you sent me of your friend Nic. That tutorial has been a brilliant source of information for me to improve my skills in drawing.

I had also taken on board the advice from you about blending less and instead using more of the pencil to render different skin textures within my work! I think i've only blended so little of my latest drawing of Jensen Ackles and i am extremely happy with the results that are presented so far.

I have started to realise that i should also spend more time on my drawing and to never rush the final stages of my work. I have done that on so many occasions in my work, and have never been satisfied with the final product.

I thank you so much for the time you have spent helping me in the best way possible, it truly means alot to me to become a better artist, and most importantly, make new friends because of it. I'd be happy to share with you my works that are being shown and being worked on.

Thank you... Yeah, I drew it with prismacolor pencils. If you use them just right, they give a painted appearance. (Which is why I haven't learned to use paints yet even though I've been meaning to for years. Why bother when pencils do the trick?)
