Description
The McDonnell F-101 was originally designed as a long range bomber escort plane, that eventually became a nuclear armed fighter-bomber, interceptor and reconnaissance for the USAF and Royal Canadian Air Force. The Voodoo began the tradition of fighter aircraft carrying only missiles for defense, as the thought process at the time concluded (incorrectly!) that the internal gun was obsolete. The Voodoo was armed with four AIM-4 Falcons, or two AIR-2 Genie nuclear tipped air to air missiles and two AIM-4's. The Voodoo found its niche as a high speed photo reconnaissance aircraft, the RF-101 being extensively used in the Cuban Missile Crisis and during the Vietnam conflict where Voodoos crisscrossed North Vietnam mapping sites.

The last Voodoos were retired from the RCAF in 1984, though two special electronic warfare variants continued testing until 1987 when they completed the last Voodoo flight in the world, bringing to an end a 30+ year career for McDonnell's bomber escort, turned jack of all trade.
