Description My favourite piece in Procreate so far, featuring Larch in her final design! Designing her was hard - I wanted a wolf character who looked like a wolf - an ACTUAL wolf (not a prick-eared canid thing being claimed to be one - no offence intended, I am as hugely fond of these as anyone else, Kay Fedewa’s splendid Swiftkill comes to mind,) - who READS as a wolf when you look at her, but whose design is easy to recreate panel after panel in a graphic novel. This... is still a trick, but it isn’t as bad as what I had previous. I have no idea why I was so hellbent in making her agouti - a typical ‘grey’ wolf - apart from scientific statistics which say that most wolves are this colour. Science-wise, real wolves don’t have clean cut white markings like this - that is firmly a trait of domesticated animals (indeed, like dogs,) but there is a place where artistic liberty needs to be taken, and, well, this is one of them. Larch also has slightly more pointy ears than real wolves entirely because I like drawing pointy ears. Again, artistic liberty! Also, even though Larch’s story is based off of North American wolves, particularly those in the Canadian Rockies, her colours are based off of European wolves, which are much more vibrant.

Anyway, I hope you like her design and that you like her background! I painted this right after spending actual time in an environment just like this and I think the spirit of that place is present in this art. ❤️
