The sorority was hosting a masquerade party and Harry decided to attend. Like most people, he had heard the rumors about the sorority but did not take them too seriously. As soon as he arrived, the sorority girls surrounded him and introduced themselves. They offered him a selection of masks on a nearby table and told him to pick one of them.
All of the masks were made for girls but they had been nice to Harry so he selected one anyway. It was a red eye mask that did not even cover half his face. He knew the idea was to pretend no one wearing a mask could be identified. He wondered how such a tradition got started. The masks, especially the one he could, would be completely ineffective at hiding someone's identity.
Yet when Harry covered his face with the mask, no one knew who he was. This included the girls he knew from class. When he removed the mask they knew who he was again until he put the mask on again. It seemed too accurate for them to be just pretending.
Harry decided to try an experiment to see if they were pretending or not. He approached the girls one at a time and told them to turn their back to him. When he had the mask off they knew who he was but when he had the mask off they did not.
One of them, Scarlett, was curious what Harry was doing so he told her. With her knowledge of gambling, she suggested some additional experiments like covering just one eye with the mask to see what happened. Despite being right next to him, when Harry covered one eye Scarlett had trouble remembering him but was able to do it with difficulty. With both eyes covered she could not remember him at all.
What Harry did not realize was every time he wore the mask, his features changed slightly. He forgot his earlier objections to the mask because it was made for girls. Every time he put the mask on his hair grew slightly longer, his clothing became slightly more gender neutral, and his body features became slightly more feminine. He was too busy experimenting with people forgetting him when he had on the mask to notice.
Eventually, Harry had long hair, gender neutral clothing, and a completely female body. The next time he, or she, wore the mask, people remembered her. Holly was once again surprised. She knew neither how it began nor how it stopped. Scarlett suggested she was just nervous about being a pledge and should do her best to relax.
Holly put on the mask once more. This time she focused on relaxing. The sorority girls pretended not to know her. It was not perfect and did not work at all when they were not looking at her but they did their best under the circumstances. Holly decided it was just her imagination.
Scarlett suggested trying it with her own reflection. Holly agreed. She went over to the nearest mirror, put on the mask, and looked at herself. She was amazed at what she saw. She was wearing a beautiful red dress which matched her red mask. With the way she looked, she was almost certain the sorority would accept her.
It was not long before Scarlett told her she had been accepted into the sorority. Holly was delighted! As an official member of the sorority she promised herself she would not hide behind a mask and do her best to meet other people which she did.
