Jerry dreaded the balance beam. He was obese and sports, especially gymnastics, was a constant reminder of it. Worst of all was the balance beam. Out of everyone in the school 100 percent of the girls and 90 percent of the boys were able to walk across it with any problem. Out of those remaining, everyone except him was able to do it after multiple attempts.
Jerry could not do it no matter how many times he tried. He knew this was because he was male and overweight. In girls fat was distributed evenly so being overweight was not a problem, at least as far as the balance beam was concerned. Likewise boys who were not overweight had fairly balanced bodies and could walk across the balance beam easily. However boys who were overweight had lots of fat stored in front of them making balance difficult.
After multiple failed attempts at the balance beam, Jerry finally gave up. He had the dishonor of being the only student who could not even walk across the balance beam no matter how slow he went. The other students were silent about the matter but he knew some of them would make fun of him behind his back. He knew there was nothing he could do about it. This made him cry.
When Jerry came home from school, he found a package address to him on the front porch. He did not know why anyone would send him anything but it was addressed to him so he opened it. Inside was a pink and white leotard. He picked up the leotard wondering if it was some sort of joke.
Jerry soon got his answer. The leotard was magical and touching it was all he needed to do for the magic to take its effect. The first thing he noticed was his body fat gradually disappearing until he had a flat stomach. While that was going on his arms and legs became smaller and more muscular. The rest of his body also lost the fat that had accumulated there.
Other changes happened to Jerry that he was expecting even less. Body hair disappeared while the hair on his head grew longer and styled itself. Feminine curves appeared on his body. His genitals changed leaving his, or her, body completely female. The name on the package changed from Jerry to Jessica which would become her new name.
With her new female body, the clothes Jessica was wearing no longer fit her. She quickly grabbed her pants before they fell off. She looked at the leotard and then at the new name and knew what she had to do. She went into her room and put on the leotard.
Once Jessica did, her room changed too. It looked like the room of a teenage girl instead of a teenage boy. All her clothes, including what she just wore, changed into something more suitable for a girl her size. She went to the full length mirror that had been provided and looked at her reflection. She looked like a female gymnast.
Her friends knew her only as Jessica. Her parents did too. All records she could find indicated that had always been her name. As far as she could tell, she was the only one who even remembered Jerry had ever existed.
Jessica did not know what happened or why it happened but she knew she had a scheduled rematch with a certain balance beam. The next day in gym class, Jessica walked across the balance beam without any difficulty. Then she ran across it. She even did a split. Satisfied she jumped off and gave the next student a chance.
When Jessica got home, there was a letter addressed to her in her mailbox. Eagerly she opened it. "I hope you liked your gift," she read. "P.S. You have gym class tonight. I will be your teacher." Grateful for her gift, she gladly showed up for gym class in her leotard and met the woman who gave it to her in the first place. She still did not know why it happened but she was glad it did.
