Description
...and when Gilbert Gottfried is one of the least memorable parts of your movie, you know you're in trouble.Don Bluth's 1994 film THUMBELINA is a retelling of the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale about a tiny girl who learns that the world is full of mean people who only want you for your good looks and your singing talents....except for a vale of fairies who is just as small and pretty as she is.
I know it sounds a bit harsh, but I seriously don't care for these characters in any way - poor Thumbelina is stuck having to deal with all these sleazeballs who only want her for their own personal gain. I know that these are meant to be the bad guys, but jeez, can't the girl have SOMEone to help her throughout this ordeal?
Well, she does have Jacquimo the swallow, but he doesn't fare any better. Aside from his stupid design and the fact that he constantly shoves the main message of the movie down Thumbelina's and the audience's throats....why doesn't Jacquimo just fly Thumbelina back to her house so she can wait for her prince without having deal with all of this shee-it? She can easily on top of the bird's back as he flies her to the vale of the fairies at the end, so Jacquimo really does nothing to help.
The animation is still well done as usual, though it looks a little busy at times. Everyone wears so many complex colours that it can be a bit too much for me, especially during the 'Beetle Ball' scene (though I love the fantastic buggy designs!).
Speaking of designs, am I the only one who feels that Thumbelina's design feels......empty? There's really nothing to her that feels unique or interesting. She's just sort of....there.
After all that roasting, you'd think I'd hate this movie. Well, the plot is all over the place and there's a lack of likability present to keep me engaged at times....but it was one of the Don Bluth movies that I remember watching regularly on VHS when I was a kid, so it's memorable in a strange way. I still remember the songs, as well as some odd moments here and there. It's flawed, but I can watch it and have a good laugh at all the lame stuff presented.
Besides....how could I possibly hate a movie that gives us the best song in the history of cinema? www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjJNpk…
