If you read the books there were enhanced female Dark Angel LegionariesΒ that were not true Space Marines but still members of the Legion and fought as well as their brothers.

That's called Chapter Serfs.
People forget that even at Chapter level a thousand marines have multiple vessels with tens of thousands people as crew EACH and their home planet with economy to support them. And usually all those Astartes homeworlds are deathworlds. So each chapter isn't just a 1000 Astartes, it's also tens of millions of catachan equivalents serving the chapter and, on paper due to bureacratic guidelines, not being allowed to take part in combat. Unless they're defending their ship or planet. Then all stakes are off.
And Legions had TENS OF BILLIONS of people under command(not deathworlders though).
And in old lore Astartes neophyte scout and guard stormtrooper were the same unit. Which kind of makes sense that a novice and experienced supersoldier and best of the best grizzled veteran would be somewhat equal if they have similar equipment. Now imagine said veteran being catachan? Yep, I'd say it holds even today.
And that's before we mention Afriel Strain, Gland War Veterans, Lucifer Blacks, etc.
We even have an example of a woman, who got blood transfusion from an Astartes and that helped her to survive her wounds and extended her lifetime. Because when you get blood transfusion from someone inspired by Captain America and Wolverine, it tends to happen. That woman didn't become an Astartes though.
In current lore main fastest straightforward way to get female Space Marine would be tech priest serving as techmarine. No geneseed required and it's technically allowed. And Magos Dominus, regardless of such concept as gender which they already forgot about, would bend almost any Astartes over their knee. Those are techpriests who dedicated centuries to perfecting military tech. Each one is like Adam Smasher on nanomachine steroids.

Not as Serfs in rank and purpose, but as full Dark Angel Legionaries with the same armor and weapons as their true Astartes brothers. They were officers and veterans that fought in battles like the rest.
The particular women as veteran Knights of Caliban were meritocratically selected for their deeds, by Lion el'Jonson to be "uplisted". Like Kor Phaeron, Luther was not a fully augmented true Space Marine with Gene Seed. Although him and other Knights unable to undergo Gene Seed implantation, were still made to be nearly comparable to Astartes in capability. Women were among the chosen. Renowned warriors and cunning tacticians from the best Knights from the old orders had a legacy Lion wanted in the legion.
It would seem that after the disappearance of the Lion inclusion of Proto-Astartes into the Dark Angels was ended.
