Description

Jack was beginning to question whether any of it had been worth the trouble.

The heels bit into the gravel with every step, forcing him to take short, mincing steps just to stay upright. The short dress clung in all the wrong places - too tight at the waist, too light for the time of day - and the skirt fluttered around his hips, leaving him painfully aware of how little it covered. The apron kept shifting no matter how carefully he adjusted it.

He kept his head low, one hand steadying the flaring skirt as he followed the secluded side walkway deeper into the wooded grounds of the estate, hoping no one would notice how unnatural his stride felt.

He’d been watching the place for weeks. A sprawling mansion tucked behind iron gates and tall trees, owned by Lady Evelyn Harrow - at least, that was the name on the deliveries. Every afternoon she left wearing a different set of jewelry that caught the light even from a distance. Jack had catalogued them all. He knew which side door could be picked, which alarm loops could be disabled.

The real problem was the staff - android maids, too many of them to slip past unnoticed.

So Jack adapted.

The outfit he’d bought was cheap, deliberately so - a wearable maid suit modeled after the lower-end android lines. The kind built with an irremovable 'Access Denied' chastity variant, a cost-saving feature of models never meant to offer more.

Uncomfortable as it was, it made the disguise complete.

He’d waited for a window when the house was quiet. No guests. No owners. Just maids.

“Hey - who’s there?”

Jack froze. His hand slipped under the apron on reflex, fingers closing around the familiar shape of his lockpicks. A sharp flick sent them scattering into the grass behind him. He straightened at once, smoothing the skirt as footsteps approached.

A woman stepped into view. Not dressed like the others. Her uniform was tailored, crisp, worn with authority rather than decoration. No collar at her throat. No hesitation in her posture. Her gaze swept over him with quick, practiced eyes.

“What are you doing out here?”

“I’m a maid,” Jack said, forcing his voice steady.

She looked him over, slow and assessing. “Well?”

“I’m a delivery,” he added quickly. “From the maid store. A gift. For Lady Harrow - for her continued patronage.” The lie assembled itself as he spoke. “I was dropped off near the entrance and told to report in.”

She studied him for a moment. “Well, that is a pleasant surprise. I’m the head maid. I oversee the staff - androids included.”

She stepped closer and, without asking, lifted the front of his apron and skirt, inspecting him like a parcel.

“A basic model,” she said, faintly disappointed. “Pity. Fewer options for guests.” She let the fabric fall. “Still. Free is free.”

She turned toward the house. “Follow.”

Jack could hardly believe it. Not only had she accepted the disguise - she was leading him straight inside. No locks. No alarms.

Inside the side entrance, she paused at a wall-mounted tablet and tapped briskly at the screen.

The collar warmed and tightened slightly against his throat as she finished typing.

“Registered,” she said. “You’re on the task list now. Master bedroom needs attention.”

“Yes, Mistress,” Jack heard himself say, dipping into a precise curtsey he didn’t remember practicing.

His feet carried him down the hall before he could question it. He moved with purpose, turning corners without hesitation, as though he knew the layout already. He barely had time to register the strangeness of it before the bedroom came into view - and with it, the vanity.

Jewelry lay everywhere. More than he’d imagined.

Necklaces spilled across the surface, rings scattered, bracelets tangled in careless piles. Luck, he thought. Pure luck.

He reached for a bracelet, fingers closing around cool metal. The plan was simple - slip it beneath the apron, tuck it away, leave quietly once he had enough.

The collar buzzed. Soft. Almost polite.

His hand shifted. The bracelet was set down beside its matching piece. Another followed. Then another. Rings were aligned and returned to neat rows. Necklaces were untangled and draped evenly. Every time he tried to deviate - tried to hide one, to keep one - the faint hum returned, and his hands corrected themselves.

By the time the vanity was immaculate, his pulse was racing.

He turned for the door - and the collar hummed again.

His body pivoted away, moving instead toward the bed. Sheets were smoothed. Pillows adjusted. Corners squared.

Jack’s thoughts scrambled for footing as his hands continued their work, the room settling into perfect order around him.

And then the next task began.
