Gen 6 is the first generation where the "modern Pokémon designs are often a bit too simple or disproportionate" really starts to shine through. Chespin's head is literally a sphere. So when drawing the reference for this one, I had the idea to give it just a little bit of depth to its face by giving it some cheek pudge. I think it really helps. I also made it squatter. Basically I made it more like Pikachu.
The backsprite reference art that I made is based on the sprite by PokéCommunity's Dreadwing93.
