Description Story:

The time had come; the annual Dragon Hunt competition had returned to Aleria. The trainers at Blood Moon Stables had decided that this year they would prepare to enter, using two of their most highly trained Nordanners. Val and Bryn were the first two Nordanners to come to reside at BMS; not only had they worked the most with the trainers but, having grown up together, they also performed the best as a team. Knowing full well the risks, once the competition was announced they started getting the pair back into shape.

Gwyn and Flynn led to the two to an empty field and turned them loose to let them just run. At first, they immediately started grazing on the fresh grass, eager to fill their bellies. A cool breeze filtered through the field, tousling their manes and tails. The seasons were turning, and a chill was beginning to creep back into the air. It would prove useful in the dragon hunt; the horses would need to be wearing the heavy dragon tack and cooler weather would help keep them from overheating.

After a little while, Val and Bryn grew bored of grazing and began wandering around the field. Of the two, Valkyrie seemed the most interested in frolicking around the field, Brynjar following with only mild enthusiasm. Gwyn and Flynn leaned on the fence to watch as the spirited mare tried several times to get her companion interested in running around with her, but to no avail.

After several minutes of this, the tabby mare gave up in her efforts, turning away from the black stallion with a huff and trotting away. He stared after her, unmoving, for several moments. Suddenly, the black stallion sprung to life, powerful muscles surging as he charged forward and passed Valkyrie, tossing his head back in a slight tease as he went. Val froze for a moment before her eyes flashed; the game was on.

The pair chased after one another through the field. While Bryn had a clear advantage in speed and strength, Val proved herself a worthy challenge in her dexterity and maneuvering. The trainers watched on, taking note of each horse’s abilities and how they could aid in the upcoming dragon hunt. Meanwhile, the two Nordanners continued to race, flanks starting to shine with sweat from the exertion.

Eventually, the pair slowed down to a walk, tossing their heads in the aftermath of a good run. Bryn slowed to a halt next to his lady, nostrils flaring. Gently, he nuzzled the tabby mare, and she nickered lightly in reply. Soon after the two horses resumed grazing in the field.

Gwyn and Flynn allowed the two to cool down a bit before entering the field, halters ready. Though reluctant to give up their day in the field, the Nordanners were tired enough from their run not to want to put up a fight. They were led back to their respective stalls, groomed, and put in for the evening. It was a productive first day. (Word Count 503)
