Arguably the weakest Pokemon of the first gen, Magikarp only has one attack until level 15, Splash, which cannot do damage. It evolves into a pretty cool looking pokemon, one of the most ferocious of the first gen, Gyarados. Gyarados is pretty strong aside from the fact that it is water-flying, making it really vulnerable to electric attacks. Magikarp is used as a plot device in the anime series to demonstrate James' (a member of team rocket) gullibility. The same conman is able to sell/ trade off a Magikarp to James twice in the series both of which end up being lost by James at some point.
