If you know the canon, then don't blame people when they complain, when yet another perfectly hetero male friendship gets grinded into the ground and turned into yaoi-fangirl-fodder

I do know the canon. Venom has an undying devotion to Zato-1. One of his lines translated is around the lines of "Nobody but him".

I'd say I know the canon rather well, not to boast or anything, but I'm a 2D fighting game maniac for 20 years now, and I do my homework ;3
That's also how I know that Venom's and Zato's relationship was heavily based on the relationship between Billy Kane and Geese Howard (from Fatal Fury). And that's not the first and definitely not the last tributes that Arc made, since they like glorifing certain motifs or quotes (not to mention the rock/metal tributes).
And for the records, I'm not saying Arc does rip-offs. The guys from Arc were mentioning frequently how many games and movies inspire them in their work, so I'm taking these as tributes, not rip-offs ^^
As for the yaoi thing, well, I do believe you're not one of those airheaded fangirls who pair any random bishie with a penis with another random bishie with a penis. But you should know, that this is how most people view ALL yaoi fans

Of course. I know many male yaoi fans who are similar to myself, and people even label them "Yaoi-fangirls" without even learning about them.
...And I know of the tributes that Arc does as well. I do it myself all the time. (Me & my sister have a GG story that is heavily inspired by Bladerunner)

Well, I'm not really a yaoi fan... I'm cool with "normal" yaoi, or when someone makes yaoi stories with their own OCs, it's the crack pairings involving anime/game characters that usually piss me off
Especially Vemon+Zato, since their relationship was so heavily based on Billy's and Geese's (cause these two are some of my ultoimate favs, and for a long time, Geese was sort of my role model
Hehe, and well, usually all GG/BB fans tend to go on a hate-spree whenever I mention any tributes done in GG/BB (cause most "fans" would rather believe that GG/BB is thge most original thing in history
And I frequently make tributes as well, when doing my OCs >3 but I leave the tribute-investigating to my watchers >3

"Original"? Seriously? I mean pretty much Sol Badguy's entire character is a tribute to Freddie Mercury and Queen.

(If it makes you feel better, I like Venom+Millia a lot, but not Zato+Millia, that pairing creeps me out for some reason, despite it being sort-of canon. Maybe because I prefer characters who are in (virtually) equal positions...

It's when Arc takes some motifs from video games or movies. Like the mentioned Venom/Zato and Billy/Geese, or when they based Chipp's otaku'ish mania over Japan on the same way that Sodom otau'd over it, or when they made a dual-gun wielding character made Noel "Vermillion" on a dual-gun character named Vermillion from Battle Arena Toshinden (even some of their normal moves are completely the same), or when they pretty obviously made the name "Ragna The Bloodedge" after "Ragnar The Blodaxe (from Mace: The Dark Ages).
Or when Arc uses some video game/movie quotes in their games. Fans tend to deny that too
Oh, and though Zato had some interest in Millia, Millia never loved him back. As for Venom, he always thought of her as a sister, and he treated her special cause "Master Zato" loved her

I like to give tributes in multiple things I like ^^
For example, one of my BlazBlue OCs is a wolf-man called Randall after the character Will Randall (from the movie "Wolf", played by Jack Nicholson)

Well I must thank you for that. I thought I was some kind of freak for disliking Zato+Millia. I already felt enough like an outcast, because the big 3 that instigates all of my hate are Sol+Ky (yes even though I AM a yaoi-fan I can't stand it) , Testament+Dizzy (it's more of a father/daughter or big brother/little sister relationship to me), and Zato-1+Millia (As I have said before, it creeps me the fuck out).
And yeah, I can see that. One of my OC's whom I will hopefully post soon was very much inspired by some of the characters from the game Primal Rage- an old favorite of mine since I was a wibble tiny thing.

The only real love relationships in GG would be Justice+Dizzy's unknown father, A.B.A>+Paracellsus (well, he gets a body in A.B.A.'s AC+ ending) and Zappa+S-Ko (they do officially get together in both Zappa's AC+ endings). Oh, and then there's Axl+Megumi as well
Though there still are multiple unrecuited loves out there in the GG world (or unrecuited for now). May is in love with Johnny, but he's too busy being the braindead , flirting macho... then there's Jam, who's attracted to pretty much every bishie in the GG world (her most notorious crushes are Ky, Testament, Zappa and Bridget, though she does state that Bridget should get a few years older, and then she'd probably date him
And then there are multiple "possible" pairings, since the game does give some hints, like Anji being in love with Baiken (but with that guy, you might never know), or how Bridget considers Baiken to be the "perfect woman", hinting he might be in love with her as well... geez, for a fighting game, GG sure has quite a lot of pairings going on

Yes, it IS confusing. However, one who takes much freedoms such as myself would be thankful that Ishiwatari is one who encourages interpretations, which is why I'll probably never understand those GG fans who scoff at other fans whenever they present a certain idea or concept that doesn't even deviate THAT far from canon. I know, I know, everyone's entitled to their own opinions and whatnot, but I try my best to explain that what happens in my art is just an alteration and NOT a misinterpretation, and then I just hope for the best...
