Description
For quite some time I did free icon Requests of videogame characters (Mostly walking Pokemon icons) and people kept asking me how do I do it. Realizing I've kept the Requests on hold for over a year by now I decided to step down the free Requests, but I didn't want to do it without passing down the torchAnd so, here's a quick starting guide for anyone interested in making Pixel Animations in Photoshop (At least the way I do it). It's very basic but it introduces the core idea of using sprites to put together an animation. It might seem a bit overwhelming, but it's honestly harder to explain in words than it actually is to do it.
One small note: In Photoshop, each frame of animation counts as a separate picture. Forgot to mention that. Also more frames = more complex animation. More frames per second = smoother animation. However, DeviantArt has an avatar size limit of 15Kb so you might want to keep that in mind when making a longer animation (I'm talking 20+ frames here).
PS: Icon Commissions are still open though, so if you're looking for something that might seem a bit beyond your skill level feel free to Note me, we can come to an arrangement.
First tutorial I've made and I didn't know much about making them so some things I had to figure out on the go. Hopefully it's clear enough.
As to where do I get my Sprite Sheets I usually use this site: www.spriters-resource.com/ .
For Pokemon I use the Mystery Dungeon 2 sprites. The sizes are all over the place (Raichu is huge in comparison to Lucario!) butΒ they have a variety of angles and actions. The problem is that there's no MD2 sprite sheets for Gen 5 and 6 Pokemon so in those cases either I use the in-game menu sprites for those Pokemon (They're small, diagonal and only two frames long!) or do a more in-depth google search for a quality sprite sheet of that Pokemon in particular.
Also, the online .GIF making tool I used can be found here: picasion.com/ .
Oh, also, here's the result: fav.me/d8ibmam
Also, here's the link to the promised .PSD file: sta.sh/2au8a6a8aj
Thanks for reading this far, comments are mostly appreciated.

Sadly no, but as long as your program has layers and can import images to it this should apply, just save the individual frames as images and use a third party (online) tool to make it into an animation loop.
Make sure to save them with a transparent background though, otherwise you're gonna have a solid block of color on your icon. Alternatively, you could actually add a solid background to the animation with some detail.

I can take a Commission if you really want it in exchange for an Art Trade or Points (People still use those, right? ... What was the point of those again?).
... Being honest I'd rather take a quick doodle in exchange .

So, I made an icon following your tutorial, but I can't seem to make it my dA icon, even though it is no more than 2.06 KBΒ and it's exactly 50x50. Do you know what could be wrong?

Axel230 In reply to MissKicha [2016-03-13 00:35:30 +0000 UTC]
Really? That is indeed strange. Are you sure it is 50x50 and not, let's say, 49x50, 51x51 or 49x49? DA is very selective with the exact sizes sometimes. Or have you tried uploading it from a different computer? Heard of that happen to more than one person.
Alternatively, can you Note me a link to your icon so I can have a look at it? I might be able to fix it.

But, what if it the sprite can't fit the frame?

You make the frame bigger or you resize the sprite .

Yeah, it will (I use CS5.5).
Just make sure to open the "Animation" panel.

Actually... Photoshop isn't free so there's not a link I can just give you (Though it's only a google search away, I think an older version is free to use now but I'm not sure).

This is really informative. I should give a try when I'm not busy.

Its funny with your timing. I was just thinking of some of your animations and this looks like a good guide to give it a try. I have very little experience with Photoshop, but it shouldn't be too hard to work out I recon.
Thank for the tutorial.
*EDIT*
15Kb doesn't sound that much to much. Do you know roughly how big your files usually ends up?

Well, this is worth giving a try at least once .
PSD files usually reach up to Mb sizes but I mean just the actual GIF file you get at the end must be at most 15Kb.

I will give it a try one of these days, let's just hope it doesn't turn out to badly
