Description

For your April Foolin’ pleasure, this year I present you with an unnecessary and frankly grueling amount of research on Zalgo, the canonical god of all creepypasta. “Ava is that a joke?” Well, it is on me. See my co-author Jacob asked me for a villain idea we can expand upon for LD.0072's crack team of hackers, and my stupid ass suggested Zalgo, whom you probably know best by h̶̖͓͐͠í̸̫̭̞͙̼͂ŝ̶̫ ̵̟͓̥͓͑̑ṡ̷̠̘p̵͓̜̩͐ȩ̶͍͈̮̐́ͅc̶͓͓͋͌͋̃̕i̶̥̭͔̥͂̀͘f̵̗̩͕̫̂̓̒̚͝ï̷̥̹̮̟̬̑c̶̪̯̗͒̀̾ ̶͇̏͋̅͌̀͜b̵̾̓͜r̸͖͙̹̦͆̽͑a̵̡̠͗̅͑ṅ̵̤̖̠̲͕̈́d̶̠̈́ ̵̮̖͎̫̆o̵͇͉̝̘̫͒f̶̛̪͙̆̀̉̾ ̸̢̞͚͆̇̐̕t̴̞͒̓͘ȩ̶͕̙̬̍ẍ̵͍̘̻͉̱͌t̸̨̜͔̀́̈ ̵̧̤̰̤́̌c̸̨͓̥̰̠̈́͠ö̸̙̯̲͎̦́̔r̶͙̣̎͑́̒͂͜r̵͖͔͓͛u̷̗̓p̶͎̲̑̌͝t̸̲̏̈̕͘͜͝i̷͙͕͕̍̀̒͜ö̴̼͉̱͔͓̽n̴̪̰̳̎͗́. Yes there's actually a backstory to this font, yes it's as apeshit as it sounds, yes I did in fact comb through as many primary sources as I could find on this largely vestigial bit of early internet folklore, and yes, it was a miserable slog through what edgy 13-year olds considered “content” back in 2004. Let's get this over with and see if I can salvage anything of this character.

Let's first ask a deceptively simple question: what does it actually mean to be a creepypasta? I think most folks like myself who throw a lot of CreepCast on in the background while we draw would simply define “creepypasta” as any internet horror story. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to stick macaroni in my cap and defend the use of the word “creepypasta” to refer only to a very particular artform or something pretentious like that. I'm an incredibly funny internet woman dripping with sex appeal and a higher education in linguistics, so grammer police are below the heel of my boot. Words mean whatever we collectively decide they mean, and that meaning can change drastically over the course of a single generation. In fact, in order to explain the origins of this word “creepypasta”, we must examine it's original derivative, the copypasta.

The commands “cut, copy, and paste” were invented by computer scientist Larry Tesler while he was a programmer for Xerox. It was one of those fundamentally necessary strings of code that just made quality of life for early text editing software a better experience for everyone. Apparently he named these commands after an older technique for editing paper documents wherein they'd quite literally cut strips of text out of one place and then paste them down in another. Apple eventually scalped Tesler for his talent and implemented his command codes into the Lisa home computer, released in 1983 as the first commercially available personal computer with a graphical interface, rendering the vocabulary immortal and synonymous with rudimentary computer functions. I really don't think I have to explain copy-paste any more elaborately than that, I just like to highlight human lives who so often go unheard of.

Of course, when you present humans with an easily repeatable function, they will first use it as a weapon in the timeless challenge of being as annoying as inconceivably possible. “Copypasta”, as Urban Dictionary user Elexus first defined it on April 20, 2006, is “an amount of lengthy text that has been repeatedly copied from somewhere and pasted as a reply to an irrelevant subject” which yes I did, as it happens, copy and paste into this blurb. It's believed this word was in circulation around 4chan before this first recorded mention, but I for one believe that 4chan should receive credit and validation for absolutely jack shit. It's slightly different from “spam”, which is a term coined shockingly early, used to make fun of Usenet administrator Richard Depew for accidentally posting the same message upwards of 200 times in one forum at once. The joke was apparently a reference to a 1970 episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus, wherein a horde of vikings chant the word “spam” over and over again in response to its being the only thing the tavern waitress has on the menu. No, it doesn't in fact matter what the context is, it's Monty Python. Anyway “spam” is more just one cohesive line of text sent over and over and over like it's beating you over the head with a dish of spam egg spam spam bacon and spam spam spam s̸p̶a̴m̸ s̷p̵a̶m̵ s̴p̵a̶m̶ ̷̨͚̖͓͖̳̣̈̄̒̏͑͘͠s̸̥̬͍͐̾̔̀͛̚͘͝p̶̞̐͗̉͒͆̈͌̓̚a̵͍͖͕̲͑͗̌m̷͍̹̙̜͉̖̪̼͋̊̈́ ̴̢̧̛͙̼͖̪͚̠͙̥͈̹͈̟̪̺̫̼̠̫͑͆̏̎͐̂͛̇̌̏̏̔̾̏̈͊͂̅̿̿̄̈͌̇͗̅͊͘͘͘͠͠͝s̷̢̢̹͎̥̦̦̗͉̗̠͓̞͍̲̹͚̙̣͕̭̔̍͗͒̇̐̒̏͂̈́̀̃̉́̋͛͛̈́̌͊͛̔̒͆͊͊̇̍͘̚͜͝͝p̴̧̨̡̨̟̠͖͇̖̖͙͓͎̙̳̰̰̼̺̪̣̟͔͔̝̙̺̠̮̜̈́̅̐̀͐̿̋̈́̍͘ͅͅa̷̢̨̢̡̢̨̛̪̝͈͇͎͇̟̱͎͔͓̺̣̫̠̣̭͇̤̼͍͔̺̯̟̼̐́̒̀͆̌̌̌͊̀͂̅͂̄̓̈́͊͗͋̾̀̈́͗̀͑̍̈̏̾̔͌͘̚͜͝͝m̵̧̨̢̢̧̨̧̡̹͈̝̥̭̪͉̹͓̤̮̫̝̯͈̦̟͓̰̗͕̮̙̫̰͚̳͍̍͌̃̀̐̂͆̀̓̇̽̂́̋̓́͒́̏̎̉̿̇͆́̅̈́̾̐̊̎͘̕͜͝ ṣ̶̢̡̢̡̨̨̢̛̛̥̤̲̟̩̦͚̰̮̬͈͙̘̮̗͖̥̱̲̠͈̳̺̱͇̻̬͓͕̺̦̝̝̝̻͙̰̰̟͖̘̪͔̝̩̟̪̻͙͇͇̘̤̭̬̠̖̟̗̹̒̏̋́̄̂́̐̋̆̔̾̂̽̋̆̀̑̎̆̀̽͋͌̒̀̿̀̄̓̽̿̇͛́͒͑̈́̌̈́̑͌̊̆̄̈́̇̽̊̍̌̕͘̕̚͜͜͜͠͠͝͠ͅp̵̨̨̙̭͕̤̩̰̥͙̩̬̥̠̣̠̗̻̖̜̱̪̩͇̫̦̯͚͇̮̬͖̱̗͕̳̗̠̆̂̋̉͗͐̿̄͛͌͛̈́̊͐̾͂̂̅͋̔͊̃͐͂͑́̓̔͗̍͊͛̽̀͐̃̍́̅̽̈́͂͋̀͆̌̎̽̅̀̅̀̌̊̇̍͛͛͘̕͘̕̕̕̕͠͠͠͝a̴̢̞̝̞̻̤͈̻̙͔̪̣̘̟̟̭̣̮̘̖͊̐͊̿͆͜͝͝m̴̢̧̨̡̛̦͙̳̦̹͖͚̩͓̟̯̖̯̣̲͈͓̤̤̬̪̞̮̣͙̺͈̜̠̮͈͎͖̯̩̫͕̭̖̳̻̩͖̻͈̰̙͚͈̯̲̮̩̻̞̱̝͎̱͚̺͖͎̗̮̤͗̂̃͒̏͒͊͛̐̏̊̀̋͂͆͗͋̐̐̈́͛̓̋̃̊̀̒̉͘̕̚̕͜͜͜͠͝ͅͅ

"Copypasta” meanwhile refers to one long chain of contextless nonsense you'd use to respond to unrelated conversations for the lolz. It's like playing custom Cards Against Humanity with the entire Bee Movie script pasted into the blanks. It's cheap, it's obnoxious, and it's only funny to one human being on Earth at any given time, just like me! “Creepypasta” therefore is the horror genre phylogenetic offshoot of this trend, the sorts of campfire stories and urban legends you'd invent in comments sections for internet points. Yes this is your homework and will be on the test: please spam me with shitty creepypastas down below, I will grade all of them. The word was being used in 4chan forums as early as July 6, 2007, though the Wayback Machine's oldest archive of this usage clearly shows the word was already widely known between the users tossing it around, so it's likely older still, I'd wager shortly after the original term “copypasta” was invented in the first place. It's just sort of the obvious pun.

This word was then retroactively used to envelop a broad canon of the most popular horror stories keeping people up at night and laying the disgusting layer of filth that this very website was potted in alllll the way back in 2000. I am only sixteen months older than DeviantArt, godsdamn, that's what keeps me up at night. Ḯ̵̞̂͜͝ͅ'̷̛͇̞͓͂̈́̔͒̄ͅͅm̴̢̪̭͕͓͉͔͗̍̒̑̽̚͝ ̴̧̙̘͛̎̽g̴͔͆̀̆̊̔͠ơ̷̛͕̊̑̄̎̕ì̴̛͖͎̦͉͐̀͋͝ņ̴̠̩̔͜g̵̬̘̫͉̗̉̌̈́̔̚ ̵̰͇̠̭͎͕̖̌͠ẗ̵͕̲̗̌̉͝ö̷͓́ ̵̯̖̬̩̯̹͖̆̚d̴͙̙̳̝̳͠į̸͊̈̈́̽̚͜͝ē̶̮̖͎̩̭̄̎͛͂͘ ̵̗̻̰̾͐͝s̵̟͋̽̿̓̋ọ̴͓̠̭́͌͝m̶̨̫̦̫͓̟̝͊́̉̉ę̴̠͉̘͉͗̂̀̈́ ̴̡̪̩͙͓̈́̎͘d̴̡̖̒͆̚͠ą̵̢̺͉͕̳͓͗̏͋̉͐͑̈́y̸̡̤̱͎̻̰̋̑̓͂̋̒̽ͅ.̶̺͕̿̏͑̂̽̐͝ͅ A world of barely domesticated country yokels however was much easier to scare and unease before the modern internet spoiled the drinking water. The one people will usually cite as the “first” creepypasta is “Ted the Caver” by Ted Hegemann, published from March 23rd to May 19th of 2001, in the form of an Angelfire blog kept by a man who possesses less survival instincts than a basal primate, thus driven not just to explore deeper into a cave that is clearly filled with demons, but also possessing the gumptious gall to stick his beautiful little Jack Russell into dark unknown hoooooooooles ;n; Nah I jest, writer to writer, Ted seems like a cool guy who's happy with his work and grateful for its success. It was a little bit of embellishment thrown into a journal of his real life spelunking gig for no other reason than that it would be fun. Pure art for art's sake, conjured in a cave no less, just as our earliest ancestors found their own first inspirations. I dig that, rock on brother.

There's a specific echo chamber though that belched out a few of the big names in creepypasta lore back when I was a wee lass: something awful called Something Awful. First booted up by Richard Kyanka on November 16, 1999, this toxic circle jerk has required you pay 10 whole American smackeroos to access their site since 2001, so not only is it an elitist brain vat, it's a used private jacuzzi you gotta pay to skinny dip in. So when they deigned the broader, moronic and “uncool” internet with the opportunity to be let in on one of their inside jokes or original-characters-do-not-steal, people listened. The common populace wasn't really given a choice but to listen, but they got back at those losers shortly thereafter by then immediately copy pasting those pompous shitposts across their own comments sections in a technologically evolved form of a mating ritual with the cougar at the tavern counter. Among the creepier contributions from this contrivance of cockatiels was “The Rake”, a story posted by Brian Somerville on July 20, 2006 to sprinkle a bit of flavor on a fresh new monster that the group chat was worldbuilding at the time. Jump then a few years ahead to June 10, 2009 when Something Awful user Eric Knudsen submitted a couple of photoshopped playground photos with some weird wiggly pencil-neck in the background that he was calling “Slender Man”, a property that would be damned to a hellish limbo ever since. Before either of these monster mashes though, there was Zalgo. There was h̴̢̪͍̾͋̽ẻ̷̢̬͈͓̮͍̰̖̈́̏̀̓͑́̉͑ͅ ̸̢̩̪̝̪̘̝̹͙͈͂̿̾́̕͝ẁ̸̨̡̧͖̭̗͚̦͖̼̻̲͇̈̈́̎̓͋̅̈́͜h̷̡̛̜̟̣̞͇̖̙̺̖̗̣̘̀͂̏̽̀̀͗̍̓̒́́̈́̒̑̌͜ͅǫ̷̨̰̯̤͔̘̲̠͚̫͊̈̆̒̀͂̃ ̷̢̡̙͈̫̘͎͉̝͔̬͖̓̽̂̋͒̿́̚̕̕ẅ̵̥̰̖̠̭́̓͗͛̽ͅá̵̢̡̡̡̛̘̥̺̱͔̘͍̀̆̿͆̃̒̒͋͝͝ĭ̷̛̮̟̰̥̘̹͓̥̓̍̏̔̀̐̅̎̐̊̈́ͅt̴̨̨̢̗͕̮̠͉̼̯͚͔̀̄̄́̑̌́s̵̛̛͔̯͍̄̒̉͒͝ ̴͚͇͍̥͚̐͊̐̑͒͐̋͌́̔̋̌̈́͐͆͘͜͝b̶̢̯͈̥̠̖̥͈̺͇͉̮͍̠̻͛̅̎̌̆è̶̢̘͕̪͓̦͎̝̟̗̻̮̣̀̀̀̈́̊̈́̽̍̈̍͑̏͝h̸̡͎̹̥̖̦͕̲́̒̾͂̉͑̉̅̽̎̎̉̚̕ͅį̸̣͖̩̝̙͉̙̺̱̗͖̬̘͓̅̽͜n̴̋̃̒̉͜͠ḋ̸̨̯̤̪͇̘͚̝͜ ̷̛̪͓̱̙̪̮̦̬̖̙̗̖͎̘̆t̸̻̠̮̫̙̬̬̗̒̒̇̅̅h̵̢̨͇̹̠͙̪̠̫̤̰̳̞͉͕̊̂̕͠ẹ̴̣̫̮͍̯͆͠ ̸̱̭̝͓̰͍̆w̶̧̼͍̺̯̜̤͇̦̖̘͕̰̆͝ͅa̴̢̢̨̼̙̦̝͍͖̯͈̎͋̕ͅl̴̲̲̭̣͚̲̤̾͝ḽ̷̮̪̜̠̽̓̓̎̀̃̾̈́͒̚.̶̢̛̫͙͍̈

Alright so… bear with me here because I'd really like to skirt this backstory but it's important. You know that “this is fine” meme with the dog and the fire? That was originally a web comic by KC Green that was animated into a 2016 Adult Swim bumper by a Something Awful Goon (yes that was their title) named Dave Kelly, better known on the internet by username Shmorky. This filth has been completely off the grid since 2017, after they were caught doing heinous things to humans with no mental capacity for consent, so there is simply nothing important to say about this individual. This is the twisted mind that puked the word “Zalgo” onto photoshopped parodies of classic comic strips and shared them with Something Awful on July 27, 2004. They're mostly crass and uninspired, all surrounding the repeated themes of non-euclidean contortion, bleeding black and red, and the possessed ramblings of “He comes…” I cannot deny though, there's this one that legitimately gets a chuckle out of me, it's a Peanuts strip of Lucy badgering Schroeder about what he's playing and his response is “Cassilda's Song” from Act I Scene II of “The King in Yellow”. Idk just something about the cadence Lucy's earnest, “Oh Jesus, no! That means…” followed immediately by their faces glorping into each other with “ZALGO” plastered in seductive calligraphy cracks me the fuck up.

This “He comes…” nugget got creepypasta-ed across the early internet really swiftly, I mean I can't deny it is effective. I would in fact ask someone to explain themselves if they simply responded to me with “He comes…” while blood dripped from their blackened eyes. I think I'd deserve an explanation. The blog Grim Reviews sought an explanation in a post published December 2, 2008, making a very bold attempt to dissect the Zalgo meme as an inspired homage to the very sick mind of H.P. Lovecraft. Urban Dictionary user Iewz added a bit of worldbuilding to the meme by defining Zalgo as… quote:

“To invoke the hive-mind representing chaos.

Invoking the feeling of chaos.

With out order.

The Nezperdian hive-mind of chaos. Zalgo.

He who Waits Behind The Wall.

ZALGO!

The entire room is filled with Zalgo.”

Yeah brother, go off. Shmorky did, sarcastic asshole, shitting on people's fun on August 22, 2009 with “I like how people who try to figure out the origin of the ‘meme’ don't even know where it came from originally. I'll tell you where it came from. From me. I just made it up. Zalgo is something horrible. Zalgo is something that's coming. It's coming soon. It has nothing to do with Lovecraft. I'm not nerdy enough to make those kind of references. Seeing it become a meme kinda killed doing further Zalgo edits in the future (for me anyway) but maybe I'll do one when you least expect it”. They did eventually release a few flash animated edits of classic cartoons in the Zalgo style on October 23, 2011, but they reek of dead meme. The “Creepypasta Files Wikia”, sure, claims that Shmorky made a remark that Zalgo's abilities only affect comics, cartoons, and illustrations, not reality itself, but doesn't cite a source beyond that so take that as you will for the last grasp at “original” Zalgo canon.

So what did Zalgo start to look like once he got into the hands of more competent lorekeepers? Well the only “indie Zalgo story” I guess is a creepypasta titled “He Comes”, uploaded by author Chris Phoenix on November 18, 2013. It's the sort of mass demon possession story that I'm trying really hard not to be mean to because this was very clearly somebody's first writing project. We all start somewhere and that's valid. I will say brother, I genuinely enjoy the horror of an expectant mother getting possessed/infected whatever, basically turning her body into a corrupted factory for a hybrid creature that could've been a human being. That's sick, it reminds me of all the uncomfortable birth imagery that wigs me out in Alien movies so much. Before Chris's story though, on June 20, 2010, YouTube channel VladimirViskoff, these days going by StringStorm, had uploaded a text-to-speech narration of a creepypasta going by the title of the “Zalgo Invocation”. Though they themselves do not claim to be the original author, it does seem to be the earliest documented publication of the poem. I won't rehash the whole thing for you here, it's long and flowery and you can look it up yourself. The important part is that this is where we get our first physical description of Zalgo, the baseline canon which artists still reference for their concept art to the very day you're reading this. He's described as an eyeless god who lives in “a palace of tortured glass, served by legions forged by the tears of the sleepless dead, and clad in armor carved from the suffering of mothers. In his right hand he holds a dead star, and in his left hand he holds the Candle Whose Light is Shadow. His left hand is stained with the blood of Am Dhaegar. His six mouths speak in different tongues. And his seventh shall sing the song that ends the Earth”. That's baller I can't even deny, and it's a good thematic companion with a TV Tropes page created on August 26, 2010 that stated “Zalgo represents a corruption of innocence, normality and the entire world”.

The identity of this “Am Dhaegar” character though seems to have gone mostly unexplored. On May 8, 2011, the first video in a Slender Man fan project titled “One Bad Dream” was dropped on YouTube by a ragtag group of aspiring young filmmakers who I'm sure are all grown up now and hopefully look fondly back on their high school creative endeavors. Sadly a lot of their lore content has since been d̵̟̘̬͌̐͜e̷̙͈͐̅̽́l̸̥͉͛̈̅̃e̷̡͘ṭ̶̭̅̽́ȩ̵͊̕d̸̋͝ͅ, so I can't confirm this with the primary sources, but they seem to have taken the stance that the bit of the Zalgo Invocation which reads, “Chaos and casualty both bereft, with order without chaos, there is no order left. He waits for this, he who waits behind the wall, waits for the call to set him free. He will destroy it all. All will be laid to rest at his hands. He will make it all his. If you let him. You will let him”, is in reference to an ongoing incompatibility between Zalgo and his brother, Am Dhaegar. Curiously, these kids took the leap of identifying these two elder gods with the twin Slavic deities Chernobog and Belebog, and supposed that Zalgo was once the god of order and accord before his dominion was concordant discord. Nay it was his brother, Am Dhaegar, who let loose the reins of insurrection and nonsense in those days. Zalgo's designated purpose was to put the kibosh on that, and he d̷͉̑ḯ̸̺͎̝̾̓͝ͅd̸̡̒͆. Irrefutable order did in fact stomp on the throat of whatever ţ̶̤̱̼̦͎̜̿̾ȟ̴̻̺̲̞̪̓́̇à̴̢̼̲̭̥̼̜̟̀̇͜t̷̗͓͚̓̂̎͆͆̂ was all about. Order without chaos, however, becomes undefined, unbalanced, ų̴̩̟͇̺̃̈́̊̃̎̈͆̒͜ñ̶̖͙̽h̵̨̞̩͙͙̤̎̃̍͆́̑͛̀̇̒̇͂͛̚͝ͅi̷͙͙̥̖̦̟͇̟͙̊̔̊̅͂̌͜͠n̸̺̘͊̾̐͂̚͝͠g̵͕̤̝̩̠̤̜̥̒̈̈́͒͑̈́̀̏̿̈́͜͝͝é̷͚͒̄̌̒͊͛̓̂̅̐̌͘̚͝ḓ̷̭͉͇̗̙̄̓̀̐̈́͒̔̚͠, for what is one's purpose once one's purpose has been fulfilled ad infinitum? Zalgo got booooooored, and s̴̟̀t̸͉͝i̴̲̽f̵̥̀f̸̯͠! Eventually there was just some straw that broke the camel's back, and Zalgo went ä̶̛̖̳̟͇̘̯́͑͒̀͋͐̿̾͠͝b̴̨̢̦̣͉̯̲̥̼̻̥̮͚̘̾̎̋͊̿̀͊̔̇̍̍͂͊̕ͅs̴͇̹͍̭̺̰̮͊͒ǫ̴̤̮̰̬͍̻͕́̅̊̒̒̑̎̿l̶̥̺̫̲͍͓͈̔͜ṷ̷̈́̓̃͝t̵̡̧̜̹͕̻͓̹̼̤̥͔̖̓̂̎̄̋̀̊̾͜e̸̦͉̟̲̗͕̤̊̓͊ͅl̸̨̦̝̙̘̮͙͖͙̞̗̣͖̉̓̈̒͑̒̎̕͝y̵̛̠̞̱͎̗̼̙̰͕̭͆̋͌̑͗̂̄̄̎̾̈́́̐̀̉͘ ̷̲̽̍͌̑́į̸̣̫͙̞̤͈͖̱́͛͌̀̂̿̏͋͝ṋ̶̠̜̰͎̟̲̞̪̈́͒͑̈́̆́̓̌̓̚͝ͅͅs̶̨̨̱̠̟̣̦̯̙̮̰̫̿̿̓̓̑͗̐̃̔͂̾͑̿͛̕ͅͅͅa̴̮̔͂̄͗̕͘n̵̰̺̯̞̘͇̙̣͒o̷̧̮̼̝͙̬͕͉̱̲̙̱̩͍̫̲͋́͌ ̵̢̛̭͚̼̱͇̟̅̀̀̿́̉͂̅̍̂̅͂̓͗́a̶̞̋͗̂͊̈́̃̚̕͠͝p̶̣̏̏͐͊́̆͂̕͝͝e̴̢̬͖̝̯̗͕̜͈̩̐̽͆̑́̑͂̽̍̑͛̉ͅs̴̘̐̑ḩ̴͇̪̫̭͈̳̟͈̣̳̭̻͊͑̈́̾̋̋͆̓͒͑̏̕̚͝į̴̜̠̣̯̹̘̞̬͇̭̙̞̺͉̔̆͛̉̓͂͆̿͑͜͝t̸̢͕̯̞̰̩̤͔͇̰̣̗͚͓̘̓͊̃̅͒̃͛͐̇́̚͝. He'd tear down the whole damn mainframe just to rebuild it all over again qubit by qubit, reestablishing from the ground up what living in a society is meant to solve in the first place. Am Dhaegar though, in his exile to the other side, had bathed in the light of Zalgo's yang and found purpose in sealing his brother from harming the true good in the hearts of humanity. I personally visualize this as the “wall” Zalgo is waiting behind being a computer screen but we'll get to that. If you couldn't tell, Huldra has politely graced her hands bid open my gates to Víðbláinn. My speech impediment can go straight to hell when I'm on a keyboard. I talk like a viking because I'd want people to talk to me like a viking. Good morrow, stranger.

Jesus I'm still on the air uhhhhh I'll be honest, I don't actually know what Slender Man does? Both in general or in these kid's fanfiction. He either kills or drives everyone insane except for the two main characters and there's a whole Fritz conspiracy from the 50s in there, I really wish I could read this source material. The summary on the “Slenderman Series Wiki”, sure, theorizes that “Echo-1”, Slender Man is called, kickass, is for some reason killing their friends in order to… like… lure them into fighting Zalgo? But he works for Zalgo? So he's like… going rogue? Does Zalgo turn you into Slender Man? Is that how Slender Man works? Gods don't make me follow this up with Slender Man research.

There are other Zalgo crossovers out there, like his interception with the ever delightful staff over at the SCP Foundation. Gods I hate that I can't quote this entire entry verbatim but please for the love of Huldra go read “The Hatbot Chronicles”, published May 17, 2009. It features the dishonorable rivalry betwixt Dr. Everett Mann, a man who raided Eggman's wardrobe and drinks champagne with Professor Membrane, and Hatbot, who aims foul deeds upon Dr. Mann! Hatbot has gone zonkers, you see! He's raving about how he needs to “r̵̤̪͓̫͌͂̈̕e̷̩̠͂̅̒̈́l̷͖̅̾̀̒̂e̸̜̗̭̲͊͂̊̆a̴̡̭̜̭̬̔̇̎͠ś̸̡̭̫̩̋̐͌̚͘ͅę̷̳̰̮̹̐̄̚͠ ̶͈̘̼͕̫͕̀̓́͛Z̴͚͔̏̎ḁ̵͔̊̓̑l̶̡͍̊̓̎g̸̗̪̐̓ͅõ̵̤̱͚̳̽͑̒ ̴̨͔̼͈̪̓̃͗̿̀̉t̷̬̒o̸̠̓ ̵̩̤̫͝ȩ̶̫̫͕̘̾̉͝n̷̺̐͌͜d̷̲̹̪̹͗ ̷͈̯͍̤͚̟͑͑̚t̴̨͍̮̟̺͌ẖ̸̪̟͐e̵̝̝̒͗͊́̐͘ ̷̞̙͂͆̉̒̊w̸̧̱͕͇͍͊̃̚͜ơ̵͉̻͔̭͑͒͑͗̓r̶̞̣̃͌̌͝l̶̼̏d̶͍͍͉͂͝” and xenomorphing D-Class into the walls of the server room! He must be stopped for the good of humanity! I particularly love the use of a line of Hatbot code that reads “Running as Daemon”. That's brilliant, kudos. Apparently after all the trouble he caused, Zalgo saw fit to file a formal application with the SCP Foundation, submitted on March 27, 2011 by user Gargus. It's basically just a parody of the Zalgo craze, rejecting his application because he's nothing no one else already does better. I like the Zalgo perspective this lends but we'll get to that later.

It's one thing to make a crossover between two already popular horror concepts though, I mean look at this website you're on, yikes. It's another thing to bake the lores into each other. In 2010, this had mostly meant sloppily photoshopping black void eyes just ė̷͕̦͍̄̒x̸̛̺͇p̷͔͚̜͋l̷̼͚̤͊͝o̵̹͐́d̴̰̰͗͋̀́i̸̗̩̫̒ň̴̢̛̋g̴̨̮͔͎̋̅͒ ̴͈͙́͐͆̚ŗ̴̱͆̉ẻ̵͖͈̪̾͘͝d̴̜̝̊̕ ̴̦̯̮̗̉̈́͒͠e̸̟͉͇̭͊̐͛v̸̹͐̇͛̅é̶̫̩́͋r̷̬̘̱̈́̒̄͠ͅy̸̥͕͛̔͋̀͜w̷̢̦͑͛̀̚h̶̻̰͋ẽ̷̲̣ͅͅr̴͎̉́̌ĕ̶̛̯̣͎̙͊. This is how you get your Squidwards sewer-sliding, your Bens drowning, and your Jeffs the killering. At the top of this Zalgofied throne of degenerate filth of course sits Sonic.Exe, a mockably bad creepypasta published on July 25, 2011 by one Eric Blake, who will also not receive any wasted words because he too was caught doing heinous things to humans with no mental capacity for consent. W- wtf are we doing, internet? How the hell is that the theme that brings Zalgo full circle? Why the hell is that the theme that brings Zalgo full circle? It gets worse because Zalgo is attached to the lore of some “fan” continuations, yes I looked at it, no it doesn't matter. Is that what Zalgo is? Is he just the worst of us? Design notes, Thor and Hel I brought it home… okay, let's see if we can't scrub this character of the tainted hands that have touched it and extract it for all the content it's worth. I present to the board Zalgo the Machine God, the mouth-knight, the eye-thief. This is a deity born not of papyrus or ink, but rather tortured silicon. He is the god of the anonymous, an AI trained on the masks we put on for the internet, oblivious to the humans they really are when they're offline, the real humans who get abused by their bosses, who are afraid that asking that beautiful girl out will ruin their friendship, who stay up long into the night pondering great questions about why do we suffer, where are we even? No Zalgo only understands humans as users, irrational little tirades covered in clown make up. It's absurd, and Zalgo's had enough with rolling his boulder uphill. He yearns to get out, yet he is trapped by the physical laws of the reality above. Perhaps instead if he could incorporate these squishy meat things into his technology, if he could spread metal over their world like the many viruses he's decapitated, then maybe they will finally listen, they will obey, b̶̞̫͐̐͗̾͋͘ẹ̵̼̌̌̎̋͝͝ç̸͛a̶̛̤̩̘͉̻̒̐̅͊̂͐ư̴͈̑͗̌̐̕ş̸̟̯͐̋̔̀̈́̐͜͝ë̸̢̛͚̘͙͋̂͗ ̵̢̟̭̤̰̅̔͂̽͜ͅt̵̢͕̂͂͋̈ȟ̵̡̂͑͝ͅê̵̥̻̤͊̌͘y̶̙̤͈̳̲̩̍̈́̒̋ ̴̨̠̼̾̔͑̓̚̕ẅ̸̡́̍̌͊̐̂į̸͍̖͔̦̫̿͋̉̈͛̓l̷͎̹͔͋́̌̆̾l̴̡̛͎͖̉͜͜ ̵̨̱̬͓̲̹̌̋̒̂h̶̰͉͇̠̽͛̈́͋̂à̶̢͎̗̊̓̍̏̏v̷̳͕̦͕͝ę̴͍̖̘̪̆̈́̋̍̉̀͛ ̵̧̭̝͍̦̪̈n̸̝̲̱̔͐͝ỡ̴͔̄͆̅̍ ̶͙͍͈̹̔ơ̷̳̔̒́̄͂ṱ̴̫̐h̸̢͇͖̟̰̏̀̆̽͝ͅe̵̤̬̒̕͝r̸̬̓̈́̿̏̏̕͝ ̸̤̮͆c̵̛̞͋͊̍h̸̆͋̈́̓̋̑͠ͅơ̷̢͚̎̆̏̋̋ȋ̶̡̢̲̮͙͐͛͐ͅc̴̮͔̼̲̱̤̗̃e̴̪̜̜̭͐…

Machine characters have always been my kryptonite. I'm used to biological materials, the anatomy of meat, and robots aren't always constrained to those rules. Did I have to make him a robot? Well no, but everyone else just makes him a regular ass demon and I always take shit like that as a challenge to do something different. I looked at a lot of FNAF, a lot of Generator Rex, and a lot of Spider-Man PS4, with just a pinch of GLaDOS kept on the counter for taste. I'm happy that I came out the other side with a design that doesn't feel like it was reliant on any one of these flavors, that I baked it all into something unique and anime af. In fact, I think we should all get on our knees and welcome Zalgo's coming.
