Description I drew this when I was, what, sixteen? So it's a golden oldie, and I thought I'd post it now that I'm finally doing something with my account.

Why is it called "Stand Back"? Uh, would you believe 'cause I didn't feel like calling it "Julie-Su"? I imagine I'll want to draw her again at some point, and I'd still like to have unoriginal titles like that at my disposal, I guess. Plus, she seems like somebody who'd say that, "Stand back, get out of my way, let a professional handle this," etc.

Okay, enough on that subject. Let's talk about something more interesting, like what I did wrong with this pic: Her head is a little too wide for my liking, and you can tell I had to redraw her right eye about five times before I was satisfied with it.

(That's one of the hallmarks of my early pics, BTW, that ONE SPOT that I just can't seem to get, so I do it over and over until the paper starts to wear thin from erasing. You'll see what I mean once I post more of my early pics. This was before I learned the cutting-edge technique of perfecting those trouble spots on other pieces of paper, and then tracing them onto my actual drawing.)

Plus I hadn't learned how to draw 3-dimensional feet yet, so she's walking like an Egyptian. Although, if I were to stand in front of a mirror and adopt that pose (and you would not believe how often I do this when trying to visualize a scene) I could probably hold it. Still, it looks a little awkward, but the boots are too complicated for me to want to go back and redraw it at this point. Oh well.

That said, I am actually pretty happy with this pic, even after six years. The proportions are nice, and I love the level of detail I was able to sneak in. You can thank Spaz for that, BTW, I used his splash page of Julie-Su's head in KtE #9 (I think it was) as my reference for her headspine decs.

So yeah, I hope you enjoy this. And that you still have some comments even after I critiqued my own piece here. One of the hazards of perfectionism, I suppose.
