Description
The view of Central Park was absoulutly astonishing. The sun twinkledthrough the tree branches and hit the ground marvously . Through the window
peered Jack down at the wonderful place. His lofty apartment sat on 900 sq. feet
of lovely living. It lightly decorated with a hodgepodge of furniture and the scent
of chamomile always poured out of the house. As he walked down from the
balconey and caressed the golden wood floors he tripped over the toy truck he
had given his son earlier that week. He slowly crept into his bedroom where his
wife and son were peacefully resting and peered at them with his dark green eyes.
Arn't they wonderful he thought to himself as he brushed his tanned hand
through his thick brown curls.
His shift began early this morning so he hurridly got ready. "Daddy," Tyler
playfully spoke as he jumped into his dad's arms
"Good morning buddy, where's your mommy," Jack lightly brushed Tyler's
golden locks away from his eyes and sat him down.
"Think she is getting ready," Tyler said occupied with his shiny new truck.
As Jack walked into the other room to greet his wife he noticed the loose
floorbaords "I'll have to fix these boards," he exclaimed
"Huh... what did you say honey," she said while combing through her long
red strands of hair
"I said these floorboards are a bit loose and that i should fix them," he
shouted over the loud hair dryer.
"Oh I see"
"Well I got to get off to work"
"See you later on tonight ,"Maria said warmly. He grabbed her in his arms
and kissed her lightly on the forhead "Okay, see ya tonight." As he walked to the
door he gave Tyler a big high five and told him he would see him later on.
Jack lived on the top floor and always took the stairs. He briskly walked
across the street and down a few more blocks through New York's crowded
streets. New York Fire Department read the sign as he entered the building. "
Lovely day ain't it boss," Jack said warmly.
"No day is lovely when there are fires to be put out," he said in an irratated
voice.
"Whats my shift boss," Jack asked.
"From now till the end," the boss said firmly. Jack walked into the living
room of the big fire station and greeted the fellow men. The day went on wthout
much of a ruckus and the guys sat around on big couches with cushions that
didn't match and played Gin Rummy and watched the ball game. "Slow day it has
been," Jack said
"Ya," Frank said as he reached for the big blue bowl filled with potato chips
Ring...Ring...Ring the alarm went blaring. Half the men jumped out of bed
cursing and ran down the stairs and the rest slid down the shiny pole. They
climbed into their gear and jumped onto the trucks."Where we headed," Jack
asked as he adjusted his helmet.
"68th and Broadway, the old Fisher building"
The night was brisk as they approched the burning building. Besides the
blazing red flames the night seemed perfect. There was not a cloud in the sky
and the moon was bigger and brighter then Jack had ever seen. The men hurridly
exited the truck and unloaded all the gear and began hooking hoses to
hydrants." Jack, take six men and head upstairs," the boss exclaimed.
"No problem boss," Jack said nervously hoping for the best. Jack took the
men and headed into the building. The floors slowly creaked as the men
creeped their way down. They checked the first two floors and carried the
survivors out to the ambulences. Ladders were being placed on the outside of
the building to save the residents from the upper appartments. Jack ran back
inside his now destroyed home and quikly made it up the stairs trying to get to his
door, but he was stopped by the sudden screaming that was coming from the
next door over."Help," screamed the innocent voice. The room was dark and the
clouds of smoke were impossible to see through. As jack got onto the floor and
searched for the body. He rummaged thought the burnt furniture and finally
reached them. It was a little boy with hope strained in his eyes and a puppy in his
arms. Jack carried him down the smoking stairs and out the door. He handed him
off to the paramedic" Thank you," said the young boy with his gleaming eyes
looking up at Jack.
"You're welcome," Jack said sweetly. "Have you heard anything about the
upper floors," Jack's heart pounded so hard that he thought everyone would be
able to hear it. Jack ran as fast as he could and double skipped each stair as he
crossed them. The eight flights seemed to take a lifetime to him, each step
seemed to lead him to the inevitable end. He soon made it to the floor and now
his mind in a frenzy. The crackling of the fire was now buzzing in his ears and
wouldn't stop. As he stepped closer to the door a fiery beam fell from the
sky and blocked the entrance to the door. Now all his thoughts filled with dread
were eating away at his last hopes.
Outside the building Frank was slowly climbing to the top floor to rescue
the trapped woman and child. Frank broke through the window with great force
and trampled over the burnt and mangled furniture and he searched each room.
The final room he came to was the bedroom where the family was hiding under
the bed all wrapped together in blankets. Frank reached in and threw Tyler who
was coughing from the extreme amount of smoke inhalation over his shoulder
and guided Maria out and down the ladder and safely handed them off to the
waiting paramedics.
Back inside Jack managed to climb around the broken beam and knock
down the torched door. Jack searched each room to its full extent and soon his
eyes were watering not with the smoke, but the sadness that had overcome him
and the relization that he had failed at his one job, to protect his family. Jack
slowly walked toward the door with his heart full of dread and suddenly the
floorboards suddenly began to buckle and sent Jack down two more stories until
his body haulted. He could feel the lifelessness in his viens and the fractures in
his bones. He closed his eyes and sank into the floor as it was his last escape
and prayed that everything would turn out alright.
"Sir...Sir, where is my husband, is he alright, why isn't he here," Maria
said breathless and full of worry.
"Ma'am we are doing all we can to find your husband," the boss said quiet
with his fear trailing in and out of his voice.
The night went on peacefully as massive clouds of smoke finally left the
air. It now late in the evening, where you could almost see the tips of the sun peer
out at you from the horizon and the morning birds getting ready to chirp. Twenty
men searched until they found his limbs deeply buried and his lost helmet under
the fallen debris. They carried him down the fully extinguished stairs and out to
the people waiting for his arrival. The paramedics quickly examined his body but
they knew he was gone by the burns and broken limbs ,but they checked his
pulse for reassurance ,but nothing."No," Maria screamed as she grasped Tyler in
her arms and cried.
The next day was like any other day except for the friends, family, and co-
workers, dressed in their best black attire, that lost a dear friend. The breeze light
and the sun shining bright made the day seem less gloomly ,but there was no joy
throughout the crowd. As the speech finally ended and the friends and family
were wishing the best to the newly widowed mother, young Tyler left his mothers
side and walked down to the coffin of his dad and placed his charred firetruck
atop it and said his last words to the hero he now knew.
