In 2003, the Right was eagerly pro-war to seize the oil of Iraq (at which project, they failed, please note). The excuse was that Saddam Hussein was building a nuclear bomb (he wasn't).
Now, the Left is reluctantly willing to go to war to defend democracy in Ukraine. The excuse is that Vladimir Putin is trying to annex Ukraine and commit genocide against the Ukrainian people, destroying Ukrainian culture and erasing the Ukrainian language (he is).

bruh, Ukraine is less democratic than Russia. At least Russia pretends to have elections. Ukraine doesnβt. Also Saddam Hussain wasnβt in charge of Iraq legally, he launched a coup against the officially recognized regime. Plus if you look at voting records the majority of democrats supported the war in Iraq.

My point is largely that the USA canβt afford to wipe people out just because βwe need to protect democracy.β Especially since many of the people who we prop up are themselves undemocratic. Ukraine was supposed to have an election in 2024, but Zelensky seems to have mysteriously forgotten to hold said election. I wonder why.

Back then Republicans honestly believed that terrorism is caused by dictators, and that if you take the dictators out, terrorism will go away automatically. I doubt anyone still believes that these days, but from what I understood it was the main motivation for invading Iraq, after the mere fact that the U.S. was pissed off over 9/11 perhaps. Fact is that Iraqi Kurds are better off than they ever have been, which is why I supported the war in the first place. There are cases where a nation's leader simply has to go, no matter what.
As for Ukraine, suspending elections in an active war zone is hardly unique.

I support only 1 middle eastern war in the modern era. That being the gulf war. What people donβt understand is that the things that they complain about in war are unavoidable. Such as the murder of civilians and the Rape of local women. Thatβs why I donβt support war except for an act of self defense. 3) Three of my kids were Orthodox, and my wife and I went to great lengths to accommodate their religious life. Ours was enriched by doing so. Attending an Orthodox Easter service all the way to the end, hearing the priest give the call in Russian and the response coming back in Russian, Greek, Bulgarian, Amharic, Mongol and a dozen other languages (including the kids giving the response in their own language) was one of the most moving nights of my life.
Even if I didn't have a direct family connection to the Orthodox Church, though, I would never, under any circumstances, show contempt for someone else's religion. That is as vile and as reprehensible as sexual harassment, racism or homophobia.
4) Like my fellow leftists, the Apostles of Jesus, I expect nothing but resistance from this broken world as we seek to carry out God's commission to humanity of Tikkun Olam. I know that many who should be on our side fail to understand what we share in common, but I believe in the value of education, so I persist, even in the face of hostility, insults and worse.
