While on a walk home, Fred gets a sizeable hole blown out in his chest by accident by a pair of bumbling would-be robbers. Realizing they've killed someone they flee as it was not part of the plan. I forget the details, but he ends up fleeing the Grim Reaper and decides to haunt his killers back at their apartment. He'd later, somehow, end up in the No Zone, a place between the Spirit World and Living World and meeting a bunch of zany and wacky characters along the way.
