The Applicant — Description
Natalie heard a door open in front of her and felt the hands of the other slave girls guide her into the library. Lavender scented candles had been lit, giving the place a pleasant sense of calmness. They guided her slowly to what she thought was the center of the room. Blindfolded as she was she couldn't be sure. Once there they turned her around in a 360 degree circle, as if showing her to someone or some group that was in the room silently observing her. Then they pressed her slowly yet firmly to the floor, until she was kneeling in the manner she'd been taught to over the last few weeks of her training. A rustle of bare feet on wood and the soft tamp of a closing door told her that they then left her there.

In silence she knelt, hearing nothing but the soft crackle of a fire in the nearby fireplace. She knew from past experience that there were usually many chairs and sitting areas in the room. Was anybody else there now? Was the Master Himself? Could she feel eyes on her, or was it a trick of her excited mental state? The Household did not admit many applicants in any given year. Would she be accepted? The preliminary training had been strenuous. If she was accepted she wondered what the full training would consist of.
