Hair Study All Three Styles - No Faces — Description

Over the past few weeks I've been trying to develop some of my watercolour skills, so I set off on creating a hair style and colour study. Each portrait my focus was on something a little different. If you've been following along with this study some of this is repeat, if this is your first time here welcome to my brilliant mind!!

Pink: Was the first of the bunch and for it I wanted to transition from a dark pink to orange to golden yellow. This was the only one that I initially set out to complete a transition over three different colours. The focus was to create a unified flowing form that was highlighted by degrees of shadows and highlights. Often going back to add a darker shades to corners and adding more saturated colours became the way to make subsections of shapes turn out. One thing I am so pleased with is my decision to keep her hair on the far side of her face lighter. This allowed me to practise the same technique from the main body of hair with paler colours and more subtle changes.

Green: Was second, and at this point I was uncharacteristically beaming with confidence going into it. The focus for the hair style was to have more a wrapping sensation that around the head. This made me put more attention into the way the lines moved within the body of hair to create the proper texture and maintaining an accurate transition of colour when a section was cut off. The focus of the hair was to transition two colours that went together less than the previous style. Though yellow and green are close to each other on the colour wheel, I selected a warm yellow and a cool green to make it a bit more challenging.

Purple: Last but certainly different at least, this was to take what I had learnt from the previous two piece and push myself even more. The other two style had been loose and free flowing so for this painting I wanted to pick a recognizable hair style and see how well I could capture it in the final piece. So loose half braids it was!! As a general rule I never paint with black therefor since the goal was to push myself I took up the challenge to transition black into a deep blue, which eventually turned into purple because art doesn't always turn out the way we plan right?!

Now that I've complete the hair for all three of them it's finally time to get the girl band all together for a group shot. Say "cheese" ladies! The next post will be with the final faces painted in and any final words I might want to share on the subject. But I will have a tutorial journal coming out explaining how I did the layers to create each look. Apologies, I know I did promise it out this week but this is a first for me plus I have the sad realities of a job to care to as well.
