At first, the unearthly howling seems just to be part of the bloodcurdling cacophony around you, the screams of horses who have died long ago...but suddenly you realize that one of these voices screaming in pain is clearly alive. The screaming stops abruptly, being replaced by triumphant howling, and the oh so familiar scent of still warm blood on snow reaches your nostrils. As the ghosts of the past are slowly replaced with the view of the present, you see a large golden wolf on a cliff not far way, hunched over a still twitching, rather large body. Blood drips from the place the wolf is standing on, and as he moves around, too busy with trying to finish off his prey to notice you, you have to realize that what the wolf has gotten is...a horse, just like you. A young horse, almost a foal, and for the glimpse of a second, you see a young ,tear-stained face with closed eyes, already unconscious or worse. But no, you can see the foal faintly twitch as the large canine sets on to the last bite. You...
...attack the wolf immediately, shoving it away and fight it off ! Its not too late yet, maybe you can still safe the injured foal if you act quick!
… call out to the wolf, trying to get him to leave the foal to you, wether through threatening or negotiating ?
...sadly turn away and leave, its most likely too late anyway, the foal is too badly injured and this is simply how nature works...
Story:
Finn shook her head, years already running down her scar covered face. "I'm sorry.." She whispered in a horse voice. The mare watched in horror as the scmreaing got louder and the ghost rushed in. But then she could hear it. Screams yes, but the sound wasn't coming from the phantoms that danced around her. Slowly the dead fadded away leaving her in a snow storm.
The draft mare picked up her head, trying to keep a sniffle down. Yes there off to her left some where the sound of screaming. Finn couldn't just leave who ever it was out here . They could be lost like her. Finn was able to fallow the sounds of the cry. The mare then could hear a ringing howl. It echoed though the snow, like glass cutting by.
Finn snorted as she came close enough to the sounds to see what was going on. A large golden wolf stood over a still form. Her eyes narrowed as she saw what the wolf was attacking. A long legged awkward looking yearling. Blood spilled from his wounds. At first the mare thought him dead, but there was the smallest flutter of life from his sides.
"My gods , he's still alive." The dark animal gasped. It was as if her body moved on its own. Her shield was already strapped to her leg as she jumped forward. Finn lowered her head and used her helmet and tusk to slam into the beast. The wolf let out a yelp as a large beast of a horse rammed into it.
The golden beast snarled , turning it's blood covered face towards her. Finn let out a warning snort. "Leave now and this won't end in blood shed." The wolf gave a growl "back off this is my kill!" The animal snarled before jumping at Finn only to be met heavy with the might of her shield. The mare used the shield to bash the wolf away. She quickly eyed the younger horse who was badly bleeding. In that small window of not watching the wolf snarled and attacked. Finn felt a stinging pain as the animal sunk it's teeth into her hip. Finn gave a bellow as she lashed out, kicking the mutt away from her.
Finn could tell that wound was gonna hurt. She snarled back at the animal, ready to defend the young one. The wolf jumped forward it's teeth glittering in the snow. Finn braced for the attack.
The air was cut in half by the sound of a thundering roar! It echoed though the snow before the wolf was slammed into. Finn watched with wide eyes as a cave bear lashed out at the golden animal. The bears teeth sharp as knifes as it grabbed the wolf and flung it to the side. The wolf yelped as it was sent flying before rising to its paws and growling. It's eyes darted from Finn to this new foe before it gave a growl. "You again! Can't you leave me to my hunting!!"
The wolf acted like it was going to go in for another attack, but stopped shirt when the large cave bear reared onto it's hind legs and let out a roar that shook the heavens them self.
The wolf flattened it's ears and turned tail with a yelp, vanishing into the snowstorm. The bear lowered itself to all fours before turning to Finn. This cave bear had thick heavy winter fur that was a deep brown. His hid was worn and battle scared. One long scar cut from his ear to his shoulder.
The cave bear gave a snort before looking to Finn. "Come , we must get the young One somewhere warm and safe." Finn nodded with a gruff snort before turning to the yearling. He was very thin built, with a pair of white take deer antlers. Beside him lay a leather bag with a couple books in it.
The mare out her shield away and leaned down. It only took a couple of heartbeats before she got the colt on her back and nodded to the cave bear. They traveled though the storm until the bear came to a cave. The bear took them in and gave a place for the young one to be set down. Finn took out her winter coat and lay it over the smaller one, trying to keep him warm.
She nodded her thanks to the bear."I don't know if I could have kept up with that wolf. Thank you." The bear snorted but nodded back."ah that golden mutt has been nothing but trouble to the valley." He eyed Finn with a snort. "I'm Trinket." He grunted. "Finn."
The mare looked back out at the strom. "You can stay here. " Trinket snorted. Finn nodded her thanks again before laying down next to the foal to rest her wounded leg.
