Oh, it wasn't meant as a request. It was meant as a "Hey, do you wanna team up and make history with me in the Japanese manga industry?" I'm just cautious with choosing who I team up with. I want to make sure my story gets past the editor, so I've just asked a bunch of artist with a solid art style.

I totally respect that, never meant to push on or anything. I'm simply seeking a partner. If not you, I'll just keep looking – or hope that my old partner refinds his old spirit so we can become mangakas together. My dream is to move to Japan and enter a magazine and get a serialisation. I'm pretty much like Takagi, I just write names. I need a Moritaka haha.

Oh jeez, this worries me...
 I hate to be that type of person but...you are aware this isn't how the manga industry works, right?
Also moving to a country like Japan is not easy at all. In order to move to Japan, you either need to be part of a Japanese family, marry a Japanese citizen, or be productive to society or they will not let you in. And even though Bakuman teaches you some things about the industry it's not 100% accurate because the main protags have many advantages such as having a dead uncle who worked for the industry and with the same editor (and because it's fiction so the main protags must succeed in order for the story to move forward).

I actually just contacted a friend of mine who has been living in Japan for over 15+ years already and has had some experience with the industry.

She says it is very hard for a non-Japanese person to get into the industry, she only knows of a few examples but these stories did not do all that well, she believes that your best bet is to get big in your own country or online first and then bring your work there if you absolutely must. Here are the reason's she has listed on why it's hard for foreigners.

There are several issues why it is hard for foreigners: 1.
The language. Even if you are very good at Japanese, there are nuances in the language you aren't going to get right without actually living in Japan.

2. The culture. This applies to both the content of the comic and the work culture here. You are expected to pull 70+ hour work weeks here, because overtime is the norm and competition is tough. You can't make deadlines, someone else can. Japan loves their own culture, and even if the series isn't set in Japan they expect characters to look and act Japanese to a degree (even Sailor Moon with her blonde hair and blue eyes looks and acts Japanese to any Japanese reader). This is a lot harder than it sounds, especially if the series takes place in Japan. An "outsider" telling a Japanese story poorly is never welcome.

3. Most magazines and editors will ask foreign manga artists to write stories about being a foreigner... even though these series NEVER FUCKING SELL. I was told by a publisher I could have my own serialization if I dropped (insert series here) and started for them a whole new manga series about life as a foreigner. Most editors who took interest in me said similar things, and EVERY SINGLE foreign artist friend I have had (who was not Asian, anyway) has been told to draw the same thing.



As you can see, it's just not easy to pull this off especially if you are not a Japanese citizen, the manga industry is very unforgiving and the work hours are Hell, she used to work as an assistant for other mangakas and I remember her talking about the job being stressful. Now she works independently on her own series like I do.

As for the artist situation, your chances of finding a very skilled artist online, willing to work for free, and take a gamble like that is highly unlikely. To a person on the other side of the screen this isn't like partnering up with a buddy they know it real life, the experience is a whole different scenario. Most artists don't give a fuck about some stranger's dreams, they only care if it's guaranteed pay just like any other profession, a gamble like that for an artist is a huge risk especially if it's about getting serialized in Japan. If the editor isn't interested which is basically what it's like more than 90% of the time, you would at least walk away with some artwork, and the artist? Nothing.
 

I honestly think you will be much better off learning how to draw manga rather than seeking an artist to draw it for you with the plans you have, yes it will be hard but trust me it's so much more rewarding in the end.

If you want to gain a Japanese following online for your manga, then I suggest either learning Japanese or hire a Japanese translator for your series and post it on sites like Pixiv, Nikoniko, or Comipo and who knows maybe a publisher will discover you, I've heard about cases where artists were discovered on Pixiv, but I'm not sure if they were from outside of Japan.
Another good option is Webtoons although it's not a Japanese company and in order to gain a good following on there the series should be in English. It's super easy to gain a following on Webtoons especially if the art is more than decent and has an intriguing plot. I gain at least 100-200 new readers every time I update but the numbers are different for everyone, there is also an option where people can click to support you on Patreon. You can still try and send stuff to a publisher but like my friend said it's going to be hard.

I actually had a very skilled partner in real life, he was more talented than any I could find online. He even had the spirit to publish in Japan, but after something happened in his life (non-manga-related) he lost his spirit. Now I'm just a writer with 14+ good names – I have studied many Japanese manga/anime, and I am very confident in my Japanese shōnen plots and characters – and I can either choose to wait till he refinds his spirit, if he does, or to seek someone online, although I haven't found any who is as good as he (you actually seem pretty good as an exception).

I know I am a gambler, but that's the fun part. To get critique from an actual Japanese editor. And I'm sure I will pull something off that the editor at least wants to see again with edits. I am perfectly aware of all these conditions of being a mangaka. A work day could be from 5 in the morning to 2 in the morning, 3 hours sleep. But I still want to pursuit my dream, or else I will regret not trying. In addition I am taking Japanese classes (I memorised Hiragana in almost month), and I have a good ear with music (I produce my own music, am a pianist/guitarist/singer-song-writer) and a good ear with languages and dialects.

Questions though:

• If I upload my names to DeviandArt, is there a risk that someone may rip-off, or am I safe?
• Have you collaborated with other writers in your past?
• Do you know any Japanese people that I can hit up online?

I'm very sorry about the situation going on with your friend, I know what it's like to lose the spirit but I think he just needs some time.
And good, I'm glad you know what the industry is like over there and that you are taking the time to learn the language. I often get people messaging me about working on their stories for free so it does get very VERY tiring to receive those after a while, one guy this year actually spammed my email with messages because I hadn't replied, acting like some entitled brat (for lack of a better term), and tried to use emotional manipulation on me, and then ended up cussing at me even though I did nothing to provoke it, literally nothing, it was just...ugh. It's fine to be a gambler and reach for you're dreams, but artists willing to partake in that (especially online) are a rare breed. 
I wouldn't go around starting conversations like your first comment on my profile asking for character samples. It's also better to send a private message rather than comment on someone's profile when it comes to something you are very serious about, that way the conversation is more private and it looks more professional in my honest opinion.

I have actually, though it was for a game project. He actually treated me pretty poorly, it just felt like one guilt trip after another and no matter what I did it just wasn't good enough for him. He always made it sound like I was the terrible person and my confidence even after the "partnership" had ended spiraled downward for a while. When I drew for him he'd sometimes have these art requests that made me feel very uncomfortable. He also made me feel horrible about my writing when he went over my scripts for my comic, that was the trade we had. When he did edit for me he basically tried to take over my story, it got to a point where it no longer felt like it was my story anymore and he even told me my writing was bad. He was a bit of a troll to artists he didn't like and watched what they were doing online, one artist even called him "stingy." He's done quite a few things that really did piss me off to the point I blew up at him. My roommate repeatedly told me this guy was using me but I didn't believe it, I was stupid. Now I work on my own, I learned how to write better, I improved my art, and the only assistance I get is from a friend who translates my work, other than that I'm my only team and my comic now has wonderful fans.
That is pretty much the reason why I don't team up with anyone anymore unless they intend on paying me in cash to put up with their crap lol.

• Sadly I don't other than my half-Japanese friend who has lived in Japan for about 6 months, he's actually the one who translates for me (it's in Portuguese) if you want I can ask him some questions and forward them to you. I do have some Japanese followers and overall followers that live in Japan, but we don't talk at all, most of them don't even seem to know English. If you want to actually speak with Japanese people then you could try the app called HiNative, it's good for those who are learning a new language, you can ask questions about Japan and Japanese citizens will answer you, I suggest you keep the questions a bit short because some people on there do type in broken English.

I'm really sorry you had to go through all of that with your old "partner", but I guess it has made you stronger in the long run. You have my full understanding. Also wooooooooow, that dude who sent you emails. Shiieeet… Know that I respect you, unlike what this prick did (excuse my language). XD

Anyways, I'll take your advice and move on to notes in the future! I seriously hope my buddy gets up and starts drawing again some time soon – of course, he is a person, not a tool. Wow. Just the way I said that, uh. <.<
